Rough In Plumbing Vs. Finish Plumbing

09/28/2021
Rough in plumbing

New construction plumbing generally fits into two categories, rough in plumbing and finish plumbing. Rough-in plumbing is the process of installing vents, sewers, connections and waterlines. During the finish plumbing phase, plumbers will finish installations and connections to get the home ready for use.

Preparation:

Shower installation

It is important to make sure that all rough framing in your new construction home is complete prior to sending in your plumber to begin the rough in plumbing phase. You’ll also want to make sure your plumber has all product specifications, plans, cabinet layouts, etc. before beginning.  It is also helpful for your plumbing contractor to walk the framed home (potentially even with the builder present) to solidify and confirm locations of each plumbing fixture, tubs, water heater, washer/dryer hookups, the main water hookup, and the pipes needed to connect the water and drain lines.

During The Rough In Plumbing Phase:

Important Considerations During This Phase:

  1. Gravity is essential for draining, so wastewater drain line pipes must be installed in a position that angels downwards. If not angled appropriately, water and waste will not drain efficiently. It is important to understand that angling too much can also cause issues associated with draining too quickly.
  2. The wastewater system must also be vented to ensure waste is removed efficiently and safely.
  3. After the rough in plumbing phase, once inspection passes, the remaining parts of the plumbing system (or finish plumbing) can be completed later in the construction process.
